Vertebrates are animals with a backbone. Vertebrates can be classified into one of these five groups:
Mammals: Warm-blooded animals that give birth to live young, feed their babies milk, have hair or fur and breathe with lungs. Birds: Warm-blooded vertebrates that lay eggs, breathe with lungs and have feathers. Amphibians: Cold-blooded vertebrates that spend part of their life in water and part on land, lay eggs, and have moist skin. Reptiles: Cold-blooded vertebrates that have dry, scaly skin, most lay eggs, and breathe with lungs. Fish: Cold-blooded vertebrates that lay eggs, have scales and breathe with gills. |
