| Today our activity was "Possible Sentences." In this activity, I wrote the following vocabulary words on the board: group, characteristics, classify, vertebrate, invertebrate, fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Students were placed into groups and given 10 minutes to create the best "possible sentence" using as many of the words above. In order for the sentence to even be considered as being the "BEST" it had to be a sentence that directly related to our classification standards which focus on how and why scientists classify animals into groups. Once the 10 minutes passed, each group received a piece of chart paper and markers to record their "BEST" sentence. We read each chart and then every student received a star sticker. Their sticker was to be placed on the chart with the sentence they felt best fit with our standards and essential question, "How do scientists classify animals?" What is interesting is that, as you will see in the pictures, the top voted sentences from each homeroom class are extremely similar. Once again, I am extremely impressed by how well the students stay focused on the topic, work together as a group, and carry such scientific conversations! |
