| This week I introduced the students to the word, Klatch. In a nutshell, it means a social gathering for informal conversations. Since our classroom is a Cafe' we have named our closing time "Coffee Klatch." Coffee Klatch is a time for the students to share, reflect, discuss and ask questions with each other. I take a back seat and let them control the conversation, who they call on, how they respond to questions. I chime in if needed, but only briefly and mostly to let them know how awesome their conversations are with each other. The last 5 pictures are of the students during Coffee Klatch. Be sure to read the captions under each picture. During the work session today students were to observe vascular plants and non-vascular plants that I brought from my yard. Then they were to notice similarities and differences and record them on a Venn diagram. Once that was finished they were to observe their seed, as well as the seeds of others, and record what their seed looks like today. One seed has already started to sprout. We think the seeds may be getting too hot on that side of the window and that the sun may be cooking the seeds. We will know in a couple days. If so, we will adjust our variables and try again! It's all a part of the scientific process. Today students also got an opportunity to look at a cross-section of a dried leaf, a freshly picked leaf and the inside of the stem of a vascular plant through microscopes! It was so fun to listen to their reactions. Finally, congratulations to Ms. Sampson's class for filling their test tube first! Their class will get a class prize tomorrow! Excellent TEAMWORK! |
