| What do plants and data have in common? For all practical purposes the answer to that questions is NOTHING!!! It just so happens that we covered these two items today during science class today. The first picture to the left shows our "Data Wall." At the data wall students can see their CRCT science scores, including the number of correct answer per domain, as well as their scores for pre- and post-assessments and quizzes. Students can also see all the scores of all the other 5th graders. But don't worry, their scores are confidential because each student is given a "secret" number and they will find their scores next to that number NOT a name! Students are more motivated when they know where they "stand" not only with themselves but where they fall in a group...how many kids did better than me...how many other kids got about the same score as me...these are the questions kids can ask to help motivate them to strive for greater goal! Often times we feel like we "know it all" but when we see the data it tells the real story. The kids were very excited to look at all the data today. Now to the plants! Today we started thinking about how to group plants. The fourth picture to the left shows the students' thinking. The only information I gave them was the drawing of the flower and the moss and asked them to make observations. I recorded their thinking on the board in a Venn diagram. My homeroom class is the only class that had a student who then identified the plant as vascular and the moss as non-vascular. Once we had our opening meeting, the students then had the opportunity to place two seeds in a bag with a partner so that we can watch the seeds grow. The students are to determine if they are growing a vascular or non-vascular plant. As you can imagine, the majority of students think that they are growing a vascular plant. Each day they will record the growth of their seed. They know that if they see roots, a stem and leaves that they have a vascular plant. Check back for pictures of our seed growth! |

when we planted our seeds I was hoping for them togrow and change cycles but when we heard that our seeds were burnt up I was disappointed and then when we made new seeds we knew that we should not make the same mistakes that we did at first so when we made our seeds they were great and our classmates picked wisely on were to put them. Like we took a theremometer ant tested the tempature to se if we should put our seeds in that place or should we put them back were they were. It was just supercalafagalisticexbealadosous. luv u Mrs. LaGuardia and thank you for being different than the other teachers hopefully we ouldstop talking and listen so we can get our work done so we can go the sixth grade
