| Anyone of you wish that when you went out to eat at a restaurant, as soon as you sat down the restaurant told you what THEY were going to give you to eat? I don't know many people who would ever eat at that restaurant again. Some would even get up and leave before they could even be served! The truth of the matter is that we love to feel like we have choices as we journey through life. Kids are no different. You have already seen your child's Classification Menu and know the task that he/she has chosen to complete. All students had to start with their Tree Map in order to collect valuable information to use with the rest of their tasks. Thursday and Friday students were finishing their Tree Maps and were ready to move on to their next tasks. That's when the awesomeness really began! When a student would say to me, "Mrs. LaGuardia, I completed my Tree Map." I would share my positive comments about their completed Tree Map and would then ask, "What is your next task?" Each student that I asked that question knew exactly which task they wanted to complete next - and it wasn't always the same task. We now have students working on a pamphlet! Some students are working on a collage! Some students are working on their imaginary animal task. Some students are searching for pictures to print from the internet. Some are choosing to draw their pictures! When kids have choice there is so much more creativity, ownership and excitement - and that makes me (and them) happy! |
