| So this weekend I was playing outside with my family without my shoes on. The driveway and the road were (obviously) extremely hot. So I get this silly thought..."I wonder if I could get an egg to cook on the ground since it's so hot?" I ran inside to get an egg and cracked it on the driveway and nothing happened. Hmmmmmm! "What could I have done different?" I thought to myself. I realized that the egg was cold and by cracking it onto the driveway I instantly began to cool down that spot on the driveway. It was then that the idea of the Scientific Method popped into my head. The scientific method in a nutshell is basically posing a question, making hypothesis about what a possible outcome, making observation and then making adjustments as needed. Now back to the egg...I decided to place the next egg in warm water so that it wouldn't be cold when I cracked it on the driveway. Egg #2...no change. So than I figured that warming the egg was a good decision, but it would be better to crack the next egg onto the road, since it seemed much hotter than the driveway. Still nothing. My last attempt to cook an egg outside was to warm the egg under water, place an iron skillet on the road and in the beating sun for a while and then crack the egg into the skillet. To make a long story short, I took pictures ever 20 minutes for just over an hour and the end result was a partially cooked nasty looking egg! I also proved that the ground was quickly cooled by the cold egg because (in the "foot" picture) my left foot was not hot and my right one was. See, I told you science is everywhere...you just have to ask the right questions and keep your eyes and ears open! |
